Munk Pack Moment

I fell in love with Munk Pack on a hiking adventure, as did my dog! So much so, in fact, that I then pushed for my team (HEXT) to be sponsored by them. This does mean that I may be biased in this review, so I'll try not to preach to you, rather give you some facts if you're considering new fueling sources on your adventures.


Waterproof, tear-resistant, cute.

Three things that are important for trail fuel (...Okay. Two of the three are.)

Unlike bars, oatmeal pouches are already mushy, so there's no worry of wrecking the food item from bumping along a trail in a pack or hand. Waterproof wasn't something I had considered until I took homemade cookies on a trail run recently, to have them turn grossly mushy in the rain.

I think Munk Pack wins that one.

Initially I was against the larger cap. It felt a bit bulky at first, but I realise that it doesn't accidentally twist off and open with the bumping and bouncing in a pack. For this reason, I can't argue with that design choice. It sucks to have fuel explode all over your stuff in a pack, as I VERY WELL know.


When I first discovered Munk Pack, they had 3 options. This past year they have expanded their line with a couple great additions.

Quality of ingredients:

The only added sugar in these guys is from the fruit and maple syrup.

Kosher, Vegan, Gluten-free, non-GMO.

Munk Pack has really attempted to make their stuff suitable for nearly all diets.

More importantly, they don't hide information and you can pronounce everything.

For example, the Blueberry Acai Flax ingredients are:

Oatmeal (Water, Gluten Free Oats), Blueberry, Apple, Banana, Apple Juice Concentrate, Ground Flax, Acai, Natural Blueberry Flavor, Citric Acid, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C).


There's not a whole heckuvalot I can run with, fuel-wise. My stomach is easily distressed and side stitches happen with one wrong inhale. Munk Pack has been a huge help with fueling for this touchy ailment. The 12g-ish of sugar per pouch seem to be about my max allowable sugar intake in a 30 minutes period, so I can gulp down a full pack and not fear the dreaded cramping/stitches on the run.

Chia from the Peach Chia Vanilla flavor helps keep my hydrated without needing to stop for a washroom break.

The REAL fruit in them is so bright and flavorful that it's an automatic perk-me-up.

Overall Opinion:

If I were going out for an hour or shorter run, I wouldn't grab the Munk Pack as it doesn't fit in a small pocket. Any time I hit the trail with my pack or Camelbak, however, there's no question about tossing a couple in for fuel with the expectation that Fini the GSD will be stealing half.

It's also notable that they fit perfectly in the back pockets of most cycle jerseys, and the cap makes them SUPER easy to grab. It was a main bike fueling source during Ironman Santa Cruz 70.3 and Victoria 70.3 of 2016.
